I’ve got a thing for teeth, well at least for my teeth. I’ve been lucky all my life with great teeth. I’ve never had braces, I didn’t get my first cavity until I was 41 and I’ve been told as far back as I can remember I should be on a commercial for toothpaste because my teeth were so straight and white.
Well, the last few years my teeth have been turning a bit yellowy to me. I had been drinking more tea and I started drinking soda a few years back too. These beverages can stain your teeth. I tried the whitening strips a few times, but I didn’t really see a difference. So, when I brought the kiddos to the dentist awhile back, I just came right out and asked if I could do a review on their teeth whitening system and when I got a yes, I was thrilled!
I went to Caring Family Dentistry in Concord, NH last Monday morning. I was a little nervous cause I heard from a few friends that it didn’t work for them. It actually hurt them so much that they couldn’t finish the sessions. I was nervous going in to get my cavity filled a couple months ago, how am I going to go through with this? …….I brought my iPod. I had plenty of music on there to take my mind off of what was going to be happening. Kat, the hygienist did say to take a couple Advil when I was on my way just in case my mouth was sore after. So between my Advil and my music, I felt I’d be fine.
Kat was the hygienist doing my procedure and she’s so nice! They are all nice there. Kat explained what was going to be going on and we got started. I wasn’t going to be able to talk , so she gave me pen and paper in case I needed to let her know something.
She prepped my mouth by inserting this very unfashionable flexible rubber piece in my mouth, then she put a film along my gums to protect them from turning lighter and then lightly places gauze in my mouth for covering. Gorgeous, huh, LOL….well, on my way to be anyway…..
It was a little difficult at first with this piece in my mouth because I felt like I couldn’t swallow. Hold your mouth open a bit and try to swallow, it’s hard to. But, the gauze actually helped soak in most of the saliva so it made it a lot easier. You can still swallow with this piece, it’s just a bit harder to do. This process took about 20 minutes to do. Then, we were ready for the light.
Kat told me the light has different intensity settings so if it feels too strong, she could turn it down. I’m not really sure what I was expecting to feel and I didn’t want to ask. I just wanted my white teeth back and I didn’t want to “chicken out.”
A gel was put on my teeth and the light was placed on my pretty blue contraption and set for 15 minutes. I just sat back, had my iPod on and relaxed. The first round was up and it was a breeze. The gel was peeled off and a new gel put on, the light goes back on for 15 minutes again.
After the second session, my teeth were noticeably looking brighter. I wasn’t allowed to see yet, but I was told it was indeed working. During this second session though, I felt my top gums over my two front teeth feeling a little warm. Kat put some more barrier on that spot and then we went for another round. About 7 minutes in, my top gums were feeling a little uncomfortable. I can compare it to the feeling of using a toothpick and picking at your gums if you have a kernel stuck in them. My top gums felt a little irritated. I still kept it at the highest light setting and just turned my music up a bit and hoped it wasn’t going to feel worse. It didn’t.
Kat took the next gel off and said they looked amazing. At this point I didn’t have to do the last session if I didn’t want to or I could turn down the light intensity. My thinking was this was a one shot deal, I only have 15 minutes left, I’m doing it. My final gel went on, I sat back, listened to my music and my gums didn’t hurt at all this last round.
Kat pulled off all the gel and took out the gauze and peeled off the barrier. My mouth piece came out and then I had the unveiling!
See, how bright, it’s almost blinding…
Okay, here’s a better one…..
Oh, my gosh! I love them!!! Aren’t they gorgeous! I didn’t want to go home, I wanted to go smiling all over Concord, LOL!
Now, I did see a few little spots that were whiter than others, but over the next 3 days I was told my teeth were still going to get whiter…and they did! Look at my before and after pictures next to each other, isn’t it amazing, so much brighter!
The cost of this procedure is now $399, down from $500. You’ll get a little bit more than I did too. When you go, they’ll take an impression of your teeth and you’ll be set up to go home with whitening trays to use for touch ups down the road. You also get a tube of paste that contains calcium to keep your teeth strong. Reading their question and answer section on their site, this procedure is meant to be long lasting and going home with their extra care package will help with that. Also, remember too, if you smoke, drink a lot of coffee and red wine, you may see different results with how long it lasts than someone who doesn’t and may want to go in for touch ups. They ask if you can refrain from smoking or drinking “the staining drinks and foods” it will allow the process to finish to its full capacity.
I was totally pleased with my results but got a real surprise when I got out to the parking lot. I had a “zinger!” Yikes, you know when you eat something way too cold and your teeth hurt? That’s what it was but only on one of my teeth. I had this YIKES, ZINGER!! Lasted about 20 seconds and it was gone. That day I had 4 more “zingers” and that was it.
I did mention to Kat about my friend who had too much pain during her procedure that she had to stop and she suggested that if anyone feels their mouth is sensitive to mention it and they can probably apply numbing cream.
I’m extremely happy with the results and would recommend heading to Caring Family Dentist for this process.
