I’m a wanna-be gardener and I dream of canning sauces, jams, relishes, beets and anything else that can be preserved! I wish I had a gigantic beautiful garden like the ones I envy in magazines, but, it’s not going to happen. We do live in the country, but have more shade than sun. Even beyond that, we’re never home in the summer to take care of the enormous garden I dream of.
So, what is one to do? Well, for me, the Ball FreshTECH Canner and the sales I’ve been getting at our Hannaford grocery store, has made me happy! Homemade pickles and applesauce is just the beginning for my canning hobby!
I was excited when I was told I was going to receive the Ball FreshTECH canning machine to review. See, I understand that not everyone has gardens and not everyone has the time to do all the canning that some gardeners do. I also felt with sales that come up on cukes and finding clearances on other produce, I knew there would always be something to can.
So, we tackled the pickles first. So, easy! I had purchased the Ball canning jars in the summer at Hannaford and last week they had the European cukes on sale for $0.99. To make 3 quarts of pickles I only needed 2 1/2 of the cucumbers. That’s a lot of pickles for a little money. Next time I will use the wide mouth jars to make it easier to fit the cucumbers in the jar. This is a new learning experience for me, and I’m happy to be doing so. Though, there really isn’t much that I think I’ll have to learn. With a touch of a couple buttons my machine knows what its preserving and how long it needs to “cook” for. Love it!
I gotta tell you, I had this huge fear that it was going to be difficult, it was going to be a mess etc. I was so wrong! Seriously, I’ve had the machine for a couple of months but I thought it was going to take forever to figure out how to use and that the process was going to be overwhelming.
The applesauce we made the following day. It wasn’t an issue of having to “take everything out again.” The machine is not overwhelmingly large like the big canning pots that several of my friends use. I’m also able to store all my accessories, the instructions and the cookbook into the machine.
The applesauce is delicious! The kids can’t get enough of it. We did make plenty and I’m so excited to have been able to can it as well.
I can see myself pulling the Ball FreshTECH canning machine out every week or two to make something new. Again, I’m not making a lot of something so it’s not an overwhelming ordeal. To make things even easier, Ball has several mixes so you’ll just have to add your veggies, fruit etc. Next, I’m planning on making our own pizza sauce.
I used the quarts for the machine when making the pickles and applesauce and you can fit 3 jars into the machine. The FreshTECH comes with the jar gripper but I had purchased the Ball accessory canning kit as well. I was glad to have the funnel to pour the liquid and the applesauce into the jar. It also comes with the magnet stick to pull the jar lids out of the hot water and the bubble remover too which I definitely needed for the applesauce.
All in all, our experience with the Ball FreshTECH machine was outstanding. Next week my friend wants to come over in between her kids sports practices to make some pickles herself. It’s very quick and easy, I can’t wait for her to try it.
